The words, explained
Installers have a word for every part of a curtain and a blind. Here is each one in a sentence.
Curtains

Track
A slim rail the curtain slides along, fixed to the ceiling or the wall.

Rod or pole
A round bar the curtain hangs from, on rings or through eyelets. It is meant to be seen.

Finial
The shaped end piece that stops the rings sliding off a rod.

Heading
The way the top of a curtain is made, which gives it its style: wave, eyelet, pencil pleat or pinch pleat.

Pleat
A fold sewn or gathered into the heading so the curtain hangs in set folds.

Fold
One in-and-out of the cloth as the curtain hangs.

Stack-back
The width an open curtain takes up at the side of the window.

Drop
The height of a curtain or blind, from the top down.

Hem
The turned-up bottom edge of a curtain, sewn for a neat finish.

Sheer
A thin, see-through curtain that softens daylight and gives some privacy by day.

Blockout
A cloth that blocks almost all light, for sleeping or to keep the sun out.
- Glider
- The runner that slides along a track and holds the curtain; on a pole the runner is a ring.
- Bracket
- The fitting that holds a track or rod to the wall or ceiling.
- Fullness
- How much wider the cloth is than the track, usually two to two and a half times. It is what makes the folds.
- Return
- The end of a track or rod that turns back to the wall, so the curtain closes off the gap at the side.
- Lining
- A second layer of cloth behind the curtain. Blockout and thermal linings block light or heat.
- Pelmet
- A box or board over the top of a curtain that hides the track.
- Ceiling track
- A track screwed to the ceiling, so the curtain hangs straight from it with no gap above.
Blinds

Recess
The opening in the wall that the window sits back in.

Sill
The ledge at the bottom of the window.

Inside fit
A blind fitted within the recess.

Outside fit
A blind fitted on the wall, overlapping the recess all round.

Headrail
The rail at the top of a venetian blind that holds it up and carries its workings.

Bottom rail
The weighted bar along the bottom of a blind that keeps it hanging straight. Also called a bottom bar.

Chain
The loop at the side that is pulled to raise and lower a blind.

Slat
One of the strips of a venetian blind, which tilt to let light in or shut it out.
- Reveal
- The inner sides of the recess, between the wall face and the window frame.
- Louvre
- One of the upright strips of a vertical blind, which turn to let light in or keep it out.
- Openness
- The share of a sunscreen cloth that is open weave.
