Curtains for wide and stacking doors

A curtain across a 5 or 7 metre door is a big piece of cloth. Here is what changes with the width, and what your installer will check.

Each curtain takes at least 0.9 m of wall each side when pulled right back.

In the middle, or to one side

In the middle, half the cloth stands at each end. To one side, all of it stands at one end, so that end needs more wall.

On a 6 m door, wave curtains pulled right back take at least 0.9 m of wall at each end, or 1.84 m at one end.

Heavier than it looks

Lined curtains 2.4 m long weigh roughly 2 kg for each metre of track: about 15 kg across a 6 m door.

Light metal tracks are sold for about 5 kg, and plastic bendable tracks for between 10 and 13.6 kg. Heavy-duty tracks take far more. Your installer picks the track and gliders for the weight.

Long tracks are joined

Tracks usually come in one piece up to about 5 or 6 m. Longer runs are joined, and your installer checks that the join suits the track and gliders.

Fixed into the ceiling joists is strongest. Plasterboard alone can pull out under a heavy curtain.

Clear of the door track

A curtain over a sliding door should finish 1 to 2 cm above the floor, so the hem doesn't catch on the door's bottom track.
